It's Gilbert Perreault, the original Buffalo Sabre and the biggest star on the famed "French Connection" line in the 1970's. Perreault was the first player ever drafted by the Sabres and nearly 50 years later he remains the franchise's all-time scoring leader. He amassed 1,326 points in 1,191 games, all with Buffalo. This is yet another fantastic looking card in the Signature Renditions line: I especially love the glimpse of the older New York Rangers jerseys and the shadowed crowd, a reminder of how poor arena lighting was in the 70's.
And there's a "French Connection" reference on the back, as the card commemorates Perreault's 1974-75 season, when he and his French Canadian linemates -- Rick Martin and Rene Robert -- finished in the top 10 in scoring. Perreualt and the Sabres made it to the Stanley Cup Final, losing in six games to the Philadelphia Flyers. It was the closest Perreault would ever get to having his named engraved on the Cup.
I don't know if it's because he played his entire career with the Sabres or he signs a ton of cards or what, but Perreault's cards seem awfully under-priced for a Hall of Famer. I won this one on eBay for about $15, including shipping.
